Tamron AF 28-75mm F/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro / the practical mini-review

Specs:
Standard AF zoom for full frame/film and APS-C bodies. Optimized for Di(gital) and has 1:3.9 macro capability / MFD about 25 cm. Filter size 67mm. Aperture F2.8 on all zoom range.

Pros.:
This lens belongs to the "very good lens" category from Tamron: it is sharp, delivers good colors and contrast and has a solid build. It offers very good results for the price (s/h 230 EU late 2009). Best at close and macro work, and F2.8 makes it very attractive overall. If it's the case I will definitely consider buying this lens again.

Cons.:
There are some significant aspects that somehow justifies the price side. The AF is a bit slow and sometimes not accurate: I got shoots that were totally blur (shoot in normal light conditions.) It develops a medium to high degree of CA and it has some softness in the corners. For this reason it is not a very good landscape lens, it feels best for close, portrait, macro work. The bokeh effect is so & so, not satisfactory in all the situations, it is a bit harsh compared to Canon 50mm F1.4. Aperture opening of F2.8 for close applications works excellent. But for street/landscape F2.8 is not recommended (does not provide a nice background blur, rather ugly softness, see the sample crop above). The zoom range is a nice one and the IQ remains constant, but for street work you will need more reach.

Conclusions:
I'd say that it is a good all-around zoom but for landscape work I am a bit reserved, I'd primarily use this lens for close work, portrait and macro.
