The Digital Camera Photographer of the Year competition is the leading contest for anyone with a passion for digital photography and is open to both amateur and professional photographers of any nationality. Its aim is to reveal the most inspirational and imaginative images, and last year the competition attracted more than 120,000 entries from around the world.

The categories for 2009:

This is Britain
Pictures entered in this category should seek to reveal the essence of contemporary Britain and Britishness. Get under the skin of British culture and take a fresh look at the familiar. Document the British at work and at play. Please note that you don't have to be a resident UK photographer to enter pictures in this category. Sponsored by Sky Arts.

World in Motion
The judges will be looking for images that capture the moment and have a sense of drama. That doesn't mean having to freeze action with a fast shutter speed - impressionistic pans or a combination of slow shutter speed and fill-in flash can also deliver a powerful sense of movement. A sporting event? Animal behaviour? Commuters on their daily route? There are no restrictions on what you can photograph. Sponsored by Telegraph media group.

Man-made
Look for photographic opportunities that highlight aspects of our world that have been shaped by the hand of man. Whether you bring ordinary city locations to life through innovative photo technique, capture the essence of an industrial landscape or simply shoot planes, trains and automobiles, get creative and go beyond mere record shots to capture something of the man-made 'spirit'.

Planet Earth
Pictures that show the beauty and drama of the world's flora and fauna. The subject's your choice, but entries should be original and striking. The judges will be looking for images with impact rather than exotic species. We're familiar with many animals and plants so experiment with different techniques to reveal something new. Whether you're shooting a plant portrait or an animal study, look to reveal the spirit of its character.

Destination Everywhere
The judges won't just be looking for snaps of glamorous foreign locations in this category, but pictures that embrace the notion of travel. This doesn't have to be a great distance, as the category title indicates. Your picture could be taken close to home. But it should have something to say about the journey or destination.

Fashion
Despite the title of this category, pictures shouldn't just be focused on the latest clothing trends. Images should be shot in an innovative way and show experimentation on the part of the photographer. Judges will be looking for fresh, creative ideas that reflect contemporary styles.

Landscapes
Inspiring views of the world around us. Rural scenes, sprawling cityscapes, atmospheric coastal shots - it doesn't matter where your photograph was taken, but it needs to capture a powerful sense of place. The location itself doesn't have to be dramatic - great light, composition and creative camera techniques can all be used to transform an everyday subject into something truly memorable.

People & Portraits
Photographs in this category must depict the character of the subject(s) in an arresting way; images should reveal their personality and enable the viewer to really connect with them. Your choice of lighting and framing should bring out the qualities of your subject. All types of portrait shot are eligible, including candids, studio shots, colour and black & white.

Black & White
Pictures that make full use of mono digital-darkroom techniques. Any subject qualifies in this category - as long as the image is mono (toning is also permitted). Try to use the medium to its full advantage, with rich blacks and clean whites. Use dodging and burning techniques to add drama, experiment with high-key and low-key treatments and look for texture, shape and form.

Digital Vision
The 'anything goes' category. Images entered here should reveal an eye for an original picture, whether that's through an unusual take on a familiar subject, creative exposure or composition techniques and of course innovative image manipulation in the digital darkroom. Or a cunning combination of all these elements.
